How the Coronavirus Crisis Will Affect Our Programs for NYC Children

This was the week our 2020 season was scheduled to begin at Kissena Velodrome. Sadly, for the first time since Deirdre & Del founded the program in 2004, there will be no spring session. We have no choice but to cancel.

While spring without Star Track leaves us heartbroken, we are busy working towards a brighter future. Our revised schedule calls for an extended summer session — beginning in early June, if possible, and running through mid-August.

It goes without saying that we are dependent upon progress in the coronavirus situation for this to occur. We will follow all best practices and guidelines available from USA CyclingNYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene & New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to make sure that sessions are safe for all participants when we are able to resume riding.

Our city has been badly affected by this crisis — the Queens neighborhoods near the velodrome especially so. We know that many of our parents and family members work in health care, first response and other essential professions. We applaud your ongoing efforts to keep us safe.

We also know that Covid-19 has impacted our families, economically as well as medically, and that the need for a cost-free sports program that helps kids have fun, get fit and gain skills is greater than ever before.

The bikes are ready. The track is ready. The coaches are ready. When sessions resume, we will make sure there is a place for every returning Star Track rider and every child who is currently on our wait list. Families will receive an enrollment link by email and do not need to take any action in advance of our restart. Our mission remains unchanged — to help New York City children discover the joys and benefits of bike racing with zero barriers to participation.

Our race team and winter training group are practicing via remote group workouts, and we are also working on remote activity videos for kids without trainers. Above all, we hope that our families stay safe during this time. We will continue to keep you informed with updates and can't wait see you and your children back at Kissena Velodrome as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Pete Taylor & David Harrison
Co-Executive Directors, Star Track Cycling

Star Track's fee-free programs for New York City children are funded entirely by sponsors and private contributions. Like other non-profits, our revenue is being seriously impacted by the crisis. Your contributions in any amount are more important than ever and deeply appreciated.
